I saw a post by Sykkboy on another forum about being self taught, and it got me to thinking....
I used to love hearing what everyone did before they were in the biz. I quit college after my freshman year to do this full time. I was a part time lifeguard and worked at Miami Subs while in college. I started "Sharkys Porn Page" WAY back in early 1996 and went full time with CyberErotica before the end of summer '96. No experience. I taught myself HTML for an English writing project at FSU.
What did you do before you were in the biz? When you started out did you do everything yourself or were you pimpin back in the day and had employees from day 1?

I was a commercial carpenter. I remember sitting on a pile of sheet rock watching all the old guys miserable and in pain. I promised myself i wasnt going out like that.
In 95 I bought an HP that came with Prodigy. I was going to open my own construction company with it. needless to say i got hooked in Prodigy Chat, hangin out in Astrology and New Age.
After becoming a room mod, I enlisted some of the rooms psychics and started my first site. I had a merchant account and a touch pad credit card swiper. I wpuld come home from work, check email and proccess the cards by hand. Taught myself html by viewing sources and copy and pasting.
Stumbled across a porn site getting thousands of hits an hour.
Started my first site Donna's Free 4 all links
The rest is history

I worked as a floorperson and pit boss then quit to finish school and got into porn by buying a turnkey paysite while in school and got awesome listing in the SE's for a bunch of terms like free porn pics and the like and was hooked once the checks came.

So Sharky it was you who tought you how to do HTML, not some commando in a wizard's hat? ;-)
Ok here goes...worked with my father's landscaping business during summers through high school. In 1990 I worked as a cashier at a Mobil gas station. Then did telemarkting for about 2 weeks for a printer supply company. Next I worked as a teller / vault teller at a bank for about 2-3 years.
For the next 5 years I worked at the post office as a letter carrier and part time supervisor. In 1994 - 1995 I "discovered" the internet and built my own free sites. I got listed on Persian Kitty, and made money simply by keeping my websites up-to-date. Thank you PK for the 1 million+ hits you sent me. At this time I also built turn-key free sites for people looking to get into the business.
I saw that my earning potential was fixed at the post office, so I left that to do desktop hardware support for a contractor with a local bank. Only did that for about 8 months. I left that to pursue my own websites more fully. A few months later I started full time with Cybererotica in 1998. I left CE in 2006 and worked for a year with alternative billing company Password By Phone. Completing my move into the billing space, earlier this year I joined L3 Payments and now focus on merchant accounts, ACH processing, etc.

I was a news cameraman and documentary film maker. I kinda got tired of traveling all the time and this just popped up and the money became way too seductive to ignore. Now I only travel a few months a year and I like it like that.

My "real" career was as a nuclear physicist - back in the late 80s and early 90s I was one of those sysops that started up the pic sharing BBS's - had the game playing and doors on the outside and tons of scanned content on the "private" side.
When the text part of the internet came along we offerred access to newsgroups and email - then along came the web and moved over - but didnt do as well as I had planned - so started in the LL biz and that worked out. Meantime had a heart attack and was "retired" and havent done anything in my real life career for 10 years now - although its tempting to go do some consulting on the side

immediately before this i worked for a mainstream online advertising agency and i had a few adult dating company clients (sexsearch, aff, iwantu). yes, i was a big purchaser of space with zango (we called it metrix direct), bullseye and spyware of the like. i had the opportunity to work with a collegue in the biz that handled additional technology to increase sales for my clients and made the move to CIA. NO, i don't sell spyware anymore! just the AI chat window technology that i talk about with you all now.

Sharky Im looking at my Prodigy founding member kit.
Too bad they couldnt make it go all that time ago. I think in Atlanta the killer was that the install diskettes were bad.... once you got them the banks didnt want any of us in a tech position using online banking and the grocery delivery service didnt deliver to 80% of the test market.
It kind of fizzled after that and I used my MAC to load up a system called Rainman...what is known as AOL now.

i worked as an electrician and just got sick of going to people's houses in the SF valley one day i was talking to a buddy of mine and we had always been into computers and BBS boards so we started a free site tiffanystails and the rest was history when i saw the checks. the really funny part is my dad is the one that taught me the tech side of it since he worked for the government helping to put in the routers and servers for the internet.

I was an undercover store detective, the ones that would bust you if you stole something, tried to run stolen/fake credit cards, use counterfeit money, etc. We'd set up CCTV systems, , train the staff, make procedures and handle internal theft issues too... it was a fun job & it allowed you to fuck the dog whenever as long as your stats stay good. I miss the hanging out with co-workers part sometimes...
